about

The compositions on this album were all created to accompany performances by modern dance students. After hitting a brick wall performing music live for the performances (which works fine for warmups and works-in-progress), the instructor and I both decided that I should do some recording for the performances, to get a bigger sound than I would be able to get on my own with a piano.

So these, over the course of the last three years, were created. All they have in common is their eventual purpose - otherwise, the range varies from acoustic to purely electronic, from tonal to atonal, from improvised to through-composed, and various stages in between. It seemed important to get away from what felt like my usual shortcuts (and in the process discovered a few new ones) - but the time constraints for each of these prevented me from overthinking them, with the end results occupying a strange hybrid space in my body of work.

Interestingly enough, each of these dances had, in their development, moved from some form of explicit storytelling into a more abstract representation of what was going on in the narrative, seeking a more subjective examination of an underlying theme. Given my history of exploring narrative through music, this provided some of the most memorable challenges of this work, and has provided some valuable insight to other works I've composed.
